Essay to the second semester : In the shoes of another

In the shoes of another

One Saturday afternoon, I was in my home doing nothing. To enjoy my afternoon, I turn on my television and I sat down on my sofa with some crackers near me.

I took the TV remote and I started to change programs. I came across ABC channel; they were diffusing Desperate Housewives series.

I looked at it few minutes. Katherine, a character of the serie, was assuring her that everyone’s in the same boat when Bree drives by to show off her new car.

I could not watch attentively what happened. I was so tired because of my exhausted week. Indeed, I had the idea to embark on a new adventure. Something I dreamt all my life but I will never dare to do. All my energy went in this.

I was falling asleep when I realized that this program was boring.

That’s why I change channel and I saw news’ headlines. Like last week, they were talking about swine flu in Mexico and about a survey about European habits food. They were telling that French are the longest people to eat but they were also the slimmest.

At this moment, I thought that if they offer this survey on TV, It means that it interests people. Nowadays, people are so superficial. Physical appearance count more than everything.

Nevertheless, I think that if we haven’t to judge a book by its cover, we have not to judge people by their appearance. A book can reveal an amazing content even if its title is not attractive. The fact of an author does not care about his book look, also can be a strategy to target his lectors choosing one’s who reads books’ sums up. In my mind, people can take care of their appearance to apply the same strategy than a writer with his book’s look.

It makes me so uncomfortable. All this headache was because of news’ headlines. I find this news sill and I judge it not too much entertaining so I change channel again.

I arrived on “Britain’s got talent”. I like see singers sing. It was great, the season just started. They were introducing singers when I saw a man with a particular look, He sang a song of Donna Summers. He was amusing me by his gestures and by the way that he was emphasizing sharp notes.

After him, there was an old woman which people were mocking of her physical appearance. Then, she started to sing, and she bluffed all the audience and the jury. Everybody was surprised by her voice. She was an eye-opener. Prier to song, she was introducing herself. This was what provokes all this mocks.  She said: “My name is Suzan Boyles and I’m 47 years old”.

I felt so closed to this woman. Indeed, this old woman was not a foreign person to me.

It was me!

The extract that I record :

So, a hundred and fifty years after the publication of Darwin’s revolutionary book, modern genetics has confirmed its fundamental truth. All life is related. And it enables us to construct with confidence the complex tree that represents the history of life. It began in the sea, some three thousand million years ago. Complex chemical molecules began to clump together to form microscopic blobs: cells.

These were the seeds from which the tree of life developed.

They were able to split, replicating themselves – as bacteria do. And as time passed they diversified into different groups. Some remained attached to one another so that they formed chains. We know them today as algae. Others formed hollow balls which collapsed upon themselves, creating a body with an internal cavity. They were the first multi-celled organisms. Sponges are their direct descendants.

As more variations appeared the tree of life grew and became more diverse. Some organisms became more mobile and developed a mouth that opened into a gut. Others had bodies stiffened by an internal rod. They, understandably, developed sense organs around their front end.

A related group had bodies that were divided into segments with little projections on either side that helped them to move around on the sea floor. Some of these segmented creatures developed hard protective skins which gave their bodies some rigidity. So now, the seas were filled with a great variety of animals.

And then around 450 million years ago some of these armoured creatures crawled up out of the water and ventured on to the land.
